The actual grammar school in Křemencova Street, among whose graduates belong a number of prominent artists, was founded in 1871. It was this very grammar school that was inherently connected with the foundation of Devětsil, which was initiated primarily by students from the year 1911/1912. Among these were such personalities as Adolf Hoffmeister, Jiří Wachsmann Voskovec, Jan Werich, Vladislav Vančura, Karel Teige, Jiří Weil and others. A whole range of these used to visit the Union Cafe, where they met with a group of anarchists and communists – they also met with Jaroslav Seifert, S. K. Neumann. After their graduation in October 1920 they founded the Devětsil Art Union.
