The building where the Poppers rented a nice, small flat was relatively new. It was built in 1932 and at the time of autumn 1938 it was home to a number of refugees, about twenty to thirty. The flat had only one bedroom, kitchenette and a bathroom and Robert recollects sleeping under a kitchen table. It was a big difference from what he was used to from his previous life in Vienna. He befriended two boys from the building and together they would frighten the other neighbours: they would get flashlights and send signals down the long corridors. There was not much else to do for him.
